Belén the Economist

Belén totally performed a cost-benefit analysis tonight at dinner. She was hungry and impatient to get eating. We made some tasty potato and onion perogies and some broccoli. I first gave her a bite of perogie. She liked that. She swallowed fast and opened up for more. After a few bites I thought it was time for some broccoli. I offered her a piece and she refused it outright. So I put some perogi and broccoli together on a fork and offered it to her. She opened wide, but just before the fork got to her mouth, she looked down at it for the first time, saw the broccoli and closed her mouth. She just stared down at that bite for a good while, opening and closing her mouth just slightly; there were some hard core calculations going on in her head ("What an unexpected turn of events! How do I get past the green thing?") She did eventually take the bite, but refused a second one.

Ha! That is too funny. I LOVE how little kids' minds work ... so much more sophisticated than they get credit for.
